TWELVE

Wanda and Lenar arrived at the scrap heap to find a battle already underway. Three wizards were standing against a hefty occorite that appeared to have formed from burnt wooden beams. The arrangement of charred limbs was spider-like, albeit with seven limbs and a chunky wooden tail that slammed down toward the wizards.

“Sylet!” Lenar called out, just as the wizard with a turtle familiar leapt forward, crossing his arms and taking the blow head on. Rather than being pulped, he staggered back, woozy yet alive. The other two rushed for the limbs, while Lenar started chanting under his breath.

As for Wanda, she could do little more than stare at the sizable monstrosity, standing twice her height at least. Occorites were strange entities, as beings composed of energy, they had no real form. Their shapes were based on the materials available, though there was a notable tendency for occorites to mimic the forms of living creatures.

Garumph had once remarked he thought it was a sign the occorites were studying the world around them, learning from its residents, and working out their weaknesses. She didn’t sleep well for a week after that comment, and it had nothing to do with the cold ground they’d been camped on.

The wizard whose familiar was a peacock had produced a hefty hammer, using it to bash a leg apart with one swing, even if the blow did leave her stumbling and off-balance. As for the wizard with a squirrel familiar, he appeared to be largely acting as bait, drawing the occorite’s attention then deftly dodging it’s strikes.

“Mocoren, hit it again then retreat! Cled, be prepared to dash away at my signal! Sylet, I’m going to get it into position, so make sure you’re ready.” Lenar held out both hands, and from the ground burst two shining chains. “Everyone, now!” The chains moved like serpents as everyone save Sylet ran to get clear, slithering around the occorite in a blink, then yanking it to the ground with a thud.

As for Sylet, the wizard with a turtle who’d taken a hit head-on, staggered over to the occorite and lashed out with his fist, punching the center beam acting as a junction point, a pseudo-spine for the pseudo-spider. For a moment, it appeared to do nothing at all, as Wanda imagined her own hit would.

Then the occorite exploded backward, snapping Lenar’s chains in the process, though from the way he was sweating and panting those might have broken soon anyway. Being able to bind an occorite that large at all was incredible, little wonder he couldn’t keep it contained for long.

Although it wasn’t entirely defeated, the blow left the occorite partly shattered and thoroughly scattered, allowing Mocoren to race back in with her hammer. A few strikes and the deed was done, the telltale white-blue glow of an active occorite flickering out. The familiars all surged forward, eager to devour the occoreal within. Wanda checked on Wumble, ready to halt him if he tried to join the rush, but he was still quite contentedly gnawing on the glass bone he’d found.
